California to pay $85,000 as settlement to a Muslim Woman for forcibly removing her Hijab



 The city of Long Beach,California will pay $85,000 as compensation to a Muslim women after her hijab,or headscarf was forcibly removed by a officer while she was in police custody.The lawsuit was filed by the women in 2016.

Kirsty Powell and her husband were stopped by the police in 2015 as he was driving a lowrider vehicle.Then in 2016 she filed a lawsuit alleging the police department of violating her first Amendment rights and the settlement was approved this week which is to be paid to her by the local municipal authority.

The lawsuit said "She cried throughout the ordeal and experienced humiliation when both her religious beliefs and personal integrity were violated."

Powell was arrested though she was the passenger after police found out a warrant against her for shoplifting incident.According to the suit,Powell's husband requested a female officer to handle the arrest but the request was denied by the arresting officers and Powell was asked to remove her hijab.

The night was spent by Powell in the prison without the headscarf.It was to her after her husband posted her bond.

Powell was "forced to appear in a publicly available booking photo without her religious headwear", as a result of the foregoing deprivations of the free exercise of her religion, Kirsty Powell suffered severe discomfort, humiliation, and emotional distress."stated the lawsuit.

Prasing Powell the American-Islamic Relations announced the settlement in a press release."We commend Kirsty Powell for choosing to defend her right to religious freedom and taking action."
